Hell’s Kitchen Construction

As a field recordist, I often find interesting things to record from friends and random people I meet. Several of the libraries I’ve released over at Rabbit Ears Audio have developed from total chance meetings.

I’m an active cyclist and I occasionally see a massage therapist after I put in lots of mileage. I love riding but I don’t necessarily do all of the stretching and things that would help me. I’m not getting any younger so occasionally a massage helps a great deal.

A few weeks ago, I was getting my massage and right outside of the office the entire street was getting ripped up. The sounds were incredibly soothing. Who needs new age music and ambiences when you can have intense road construction!!

I returned a week later and got myself on the rooftop. There was a backhoe picking up giant pieces of road and dropping them into the back of dump truck:

The loud bangs occurred when the backhoe had to break up some of the larger pieces with its bucket. I love all of the crazy reflections off the nearby buildings.

Viva La Road Maintenance!

Recording Geek Note: Rig consists of Schoeps CMC5′s setup for MS, with the MK4 as the mid. It was all tracked to a Sound Devices 744T at 24/96.
