Florida Wind

Image

Back in December, I was in Florida for a couple of days.  It was as a week of unusually chilly weather and overcast skies.  I was hoping to do a decent amount of recording that week, but didn’t have much luck.  One nice feature of the overcast skies and rain was the sound of wind passing through the palm trees.  In this recording I had the zeppelin right between to palm trees whose fronds were overlapping and banging against each other in the wind.

This edit is one of the cleaner passages where planes or cars weren’t rumbling by, and if you listen closely toward the end, you can hear small drops of rain beginning to fall.

Recording Geek Note:  Rig consists of Schoeps CMC5 setup for MS, with the MK4 as the mid.  It was all tracked to a Sound Devices 744T at 24/96.

  1. Listening to the wind/rain roaring outside the window in NYC while listening to the the palm trees in Florida; not sure which is more dramatic!

  2. this must be the best blog find in ages, thnx!

i just wondered what you guys use for holding your mics. i recently went to morocco and did some recording. to keep the size of my kit down, i used a rycote pistol grip and a small table tripod (about 10 cm high). i used the standard foam of my mics, together with some windjammers. not ideal, but i just couldn’t take a zeppelin with me.

i found out it was nearly impossible to do long takes with the pistol grip without handling noise. even the smallest repositioning of a finger would usually result in some low frequency handling noise. and the tripod was usually too close to the ground for a good recording.

so how do you guys hold your mics? do you use a handheld boom? a boom stand? anybody ever uses a pistolgrip?
